The popularity of the Allcock Aerial

I wonder if Henry Coxon had any idea in 1896, that he was to be responsible for designing one of the milestones in the history of angling equipment. Allcock & Co. were not slow to take up his reel design with its ultra light drum and spoked frame, and the now famous ‘Coxon Aerial’ was born. When wood was no longer used in the construction of the backplate and aluminium took its place, the reel was renamed the ‘Allcock Aerial’ and the rest, as they say, is history.

The reel below has just been advertised on our website. A beautiful early Coxon.

There are so many variations that we still find un-catalogued models. A number of these have turned up over the last few 10 or so years including an uncatalogued 2 ¾” Ebonite Aerial with brass BP line guard that we were lucky enough to snap up in an online auction. Rare models will always command top prices, with that I mean, rare sizes, rare bottle shaped handles, rare models and oddities such as an Allcock Aerial that had 4 perforations to one side of the front plate and only 3 on the other. The list goes on.

We love all rare models and the history behind these fantastic reels. If you’re considering starting an Aerial collection there is no better time. You can snap up decent ventilated Aerials from £250  – £400, good Allcock Aerial Populars from around £150 – £200 and the rarer types anything from £500 upwards.

Here is the 2 3/4” ebonite Aerial we were lucky enough to buy at an online auction in 2017.

Here at Thomas Turner, as we have previously mentioned, we have been lucky enough to buy in a large collection of Aerials from all ages, ranging from the early first model Coxons through to the all ebonite, ventilated, alloy and ebonite spools, Popular and the later model Aerials. Approximately 50 in total that I am still in the process of listing!

Another slight Aerial oddity that we have recently listed. A nice ventilated 3.5” model with an over sized brass BP line guard. This reel spins like a dream and I’m sure it wont stay for too long on the website.

Please check out the aerial collection on our website and if we can be of any help please call the office on 01275 261099 or my mobile 07535 590617, or email me at davetownsend@thomasturner.com
